The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) is for all believers, but if we do not understand what it is, we cannot respond to it. 

A few years ago, Barna Group reported: When asked if they had previously “heard of the Great Commission,” half of U.S. churchgoers (51%) said they did not know this term. It would be reassuring to assume that the other half who know the term are also familiar with the passage known by this name, but that proportion is low (17%).

Meanwhile, “the Great Commission” does ring a bell for 1 in 4 (25%), though they can’t remember what it is. Six percent of churchgoers are simply not sure whether they have heard the term before. These findings may help explain why fewer people in the U.S. are making intentional efforts to engage the lost in places near, far, and hard. 

Churches can encourage and empower people to consider God’s calling for them. Creating a sending culture in your church is a long-term effort, but sharing opportunities for cross-cultural missions is one way to pursue this. 

One Mission Society (OMS) opportunities include short-term trips, 1-to-12-month mid-term internships, and one year or more long-term service opportunities. God can use your passions, gifts, and talents in:
