What is the church about? Why do we go through planning, developing, and executing events and activities in our churches? Is it only to satisfy the wants and “needs” of our members? We hope it’s to equip, encourage, and empower people for God’s work. We have a global task—the Great Commission—that includes the people in your church. 

Mission leader Mike Stachura stated, “The mark of a great church is not its seating capacity but its sending capacity.”

There is always a tension, and we believe rightly so, related to measuring success in the church with numbers. If we are measuring to compare, boast, or just because we like graphs and reports, we are focused on human activities at best; at worst, we are in sin. However, if we are obedient to do our part to accomplish the Great Task, numbers can give us a tangible way to celebrate what God is doing and measure our progress toward something God has said that we will do as his disciples. 

These are some measurable things that churches connected with OMS have shared they are doing to help create a culture of sending:

• “We have a goal to raise up and send 1% of our regular attenders for long-term global outreach over the next three years.”

• “We dedicate our morning prayer time each Friday to pray for our mission partners, world events, and those without access to the Gospel.” 

• “We bring in a missionary every quarter to speak on Sunday morning and meet with small groups.” 

• “We tithe 10% of our operating budget to missions and hold an annual mission event that includes an offering above tithe giving for designated mission projects.”

• “We set a goal every year to take 10% of our members on a short-term mission trip.”

As part of your sending plan, recruit someone in your church to pray with OMS Church Partners once a month on our Luke 10:2 prayer Zoom call at 10:02 a.m. EST every first Monday of the month. As we pray for churches, we love having individuals join us to pray for the needs of their own church!
