What OMS' Summer Interns Said About Missions

The One Mission Society (OMS) World Headquarters in Greenwood, IN, employs several college-age interns each summer. One way OMS’ staff grows is learning from our interns, especially about how to better encourage young adults to consider engaging in global missions. Darin Jordan, the summer 2023 Church Partners intern, summarized some highlights from this year’s discussion on how churches can engage Gen Z.

Planning – Gen Zers desire to be included as adults and peers in strategic conversations and decisions. They want to contribute not just in the execution of ministry but in the planning as well. What intentional ways are you including Gen Zers into planning and decision making?

Presentation – Quality and frequency of communication are important to Gen Z. They are growing up with VR and AI. How can you use your physical and digital footprint to consistently communicate high quality missions information?

Practical – Gen Z doesn’t only want information; they are action-oriented and desire to live out their faith practically. What ways are you inviting them into personal and everyday application of the Great Commission?

(Don’t) Pull Punches – Gen Z is not looking for a watered-down faith. This generation embraces complexity and will challenge you to engage with them on hard issues. What are cultural topics that you or your church have wrestled with, and how can you press into these with grace and truth?

More than 80% of OMS interns shared that before serving at OMS and based on their own church experiences, they were not aware that missions is important. OMS USA Church Partners is here to help you and your team brainstorm and implement strategies to engage Gen Zers (and every generation) to participate in the Great Commission.
